The finest in Australian-made leather goods at Coco
Lisa Song’s passion for Australian-made leather products borders on the fanatical.
The proprietor of Coco Leather in The Rocks Centre has been selling Australian-grown and -made leather products to tourists and locals alike for most of the past 30 years.
For Song, there’s no substitute anywhere in the world for good Australian leather. “It makes a great gift for visitors to Australia, they cannot get this quality when they go home.”
Australian-sourced leather, together with warm woollen jackets, comprise an astonishing array of authentic gifts for tourists that are a cut above the standard souvenir shop.
“Everything we stock is ethically and legally sourced,” Song says. “I will go to the tannery myself to choose the leather we use, I know the best leather, the best colours, I have been doing this for a very long time.”
“I go to the manufacturer and say ‘can you make this’ and show them a photo, and they will make it for us. I have been in this business a long time.”
Born and raised in South Korea, Song has spent the past 30 years in Australia – the vast majority selling leather products or fashion in The Rocks area. A tenant of The Rocks Centre since 1988, she says she understands exactly what tourists want.
“I know they only want to buy Australian-made, I know they want something unique to take home with them, and I help them to choose. By the end the customer understands, ‘this woman knows her leather’,” Song says.
There is nowhere in the world she would rather be than her beloved Rocks precinct. “It is my home here, my own place, my comfort zone,” she says
