Art That Rocks And Glows: Luminous, Vivid, Light Show

Light Show at Hayward Gallery, London. Photo by Linda Nylind. 27/1/2013.

Throughout the year, every year, The Rocks lights up with so many amazing arts events and experiences, and this year is no different. Coming up, we play host to some of 2015’s most anticipated (and bright) events.

Light Show

Light Show comes to Sydney to light up the winter after a sell-out season at the Hayward Gallery in London. Inviting you to experience the spatial and sensory effects of light in myriad forms, Light Show ranges from atmospheric installations to sculptures that you can move around and even through. Curated by Cliff Lauson of Hayward Gallery, it features the work of 17 international artists including James Turrell, David Batchelor, Jim Campbell, Carlos Cruz-Diez, Bill Culbert, Dan Flavin, Ceal Floyer, Jenny Holzer, Ann Veronica Janssens, Brigitte Kowanz, Anthony McCall, François Morellet, Iván Navarro, Katie Paterson, Leo Villareal and Cerith Wyn Evans.

Luminous

Luminous

Luminous has already kicked off for the year, and you don’t want to miss it. Curated by MCA Senior Curator Natasha Bullock, it’s an exhibition of light works by Australian artists from the MCA Collection.

Luminous features shooting star spirits, geometric patterns of light and dark dancing on walls, ambient environments and infinity windows carved into architectural space. It presents works created from the 1970s to now, and includes a major new commission by Australian Indigenous artist Jonathan Jones, alongside work by Sandra Selig, Peter Kennedy, William Seeto and John Mawurndjul. Light Show will be open late every night during Vivid Sydney (22 May – 8 Jun).

Vivid Sydney

Continuing the theme of luminescence and illumination, one of the most anticipated arts events of the year, Vivid Sydney returns with an exceptional line-up. Take in The Rocks at night with the Vivid Light Walk, beginning with BeatDice, a series of cubes that lights up and grooves when re-arranged, allowing you DJ with the light, while Intel Galileo boards reproduce the neurons and synapses that make our brains work in Affinity. Next on your journey, you’ll come across Entitle, a giant Rococo pig that’s one of Vivid 2015‘s statement ‘big things’. Cadmans Cottage becomes the centre of attention for INTER/Play, the biggest multi-player experience of the Light Walk. The Dresses, a ghostly apparition in the tiny cobblestoned space of Kendall Lane, is created by fibre-optics, and Life Story, created by BBC Earth, finds a dramatic, large-scale setting on the Argyle Cut. From across the water, you can also take in the Sydney Opera House Lighting the Sails from The Rocks‘ perfect vantage point. Interact with a piece of pop art and put yourself in the picture with You Are Here. A 4m tall sculpture, it provides the perfect photo opportunity and lets you locate yourself in point and time at Vivid Sydney. Create music with The Laser Harp, explore shadow play with Toy Shadows and experience the power of words at Tumbleweed.

While in The Rocks, you’ll be spoiled for choice for places to eat and drink, thanks to the many fantastic restaurants, bars, cafes and pubs. Make sure you take advantage of the many Vivid offers and deals.
